Link Ethiopia is a charity dedicated to supporting education in Ethiopia and increasing cultural awareness between young people in Ethiopia and the UK.
Link Ethiopia set up, support and help manage links between U.K. schools and schools in Ethiopia, in both the primary and secondary sectors. The core value of their system of links is one of equal partnership and shared learning.
By encouraging young people to communicate and work together, they aim to create a real awareness not only of the diversity that exists between them but also of their shared aims and ambitions in a global community.
Inspire Worldwide partnered with Link in 2012 with a shared vision of facilitating school links by managing visits to link schools in Ethiopia.
Many of the schools they work with in Ethiopia are severely under-resourced. They aim to assist schools in identifying, implementing and managing projects to improve the quality of the schooling they offer.
This may involve basic necessities such as clean running water, adequate classrooms, the training of teachers in computer skills, or the management of libraries in larger schools. They work with schools in both rural and urban areas and strive to enable all of their schools to deliver suitable education for the needs of their community.
To build a library, classroom, kitchen, water station or pit latrine for one of Link’s schools in Ethiopia.
You will work alongside local Link staff and school teachers on a requested infrastructure project for one of Link’s partner schools. Many
of the schools are in a very poor condition – often with bad lighting, minimal desks and poor kitchen and toilet facilities.
You will work with a team of local builders to renovate classrooms, construct libraries, pit latrines or kitchens and improve the educational facilities available to the children in these communities. Extra projects will include running educational sessions on English, Sports & Games, cultural exchange, art & crafts and much more.
Inspire will ensure you are fully prepared for any sessions and provides materials and ideas so you can create your own games and informal sessions for the children.
We include a 2 or 3 day post-trip visit to Lake Chamo’s famous crocodile market, as well as the traditional Dorze Tribe village high up in the mountains.
You may also see some of Ethiopia’s incredible ancient heritage at some of the UNESCO World Heritage sites – such as Tiya stellae fields or the rock-hewn church of Adadi Maryam.
You will be staying in the heart of the community either in a rented house or a nearby local hotel. Food will be provided and there will be plenty of opportunity to help the local cooks prepare lunches on site.
